Celebrating Australian Landscapes with Artist Julie White

Julie White is an Australian artist and textile designer based in Adelaide on Kaurna Country. Known for her vibrant, hand-drawn prints, Julie is inspired by the rich colour and texture of Australia’s natural landscapes.

As part of our Winter 2024 collection, we’ve collaborated with Julie on a range of limited-edition throws that reflect the beauty of the Australian bush. Arriving in three distinct prints inspired by native flora, each design is made from a luxuriously soft blend of wool and cashmere.

We recently spoke to Julie about her creative process, finding inspiration in nature and how our collaboration came to life.

Can you begin by talking to your creative process?

My home for inspiration has always been the Australian landscape. I get pretty emotional just being there. The flora and fauna just have so much personality. I’m lucky to live in South Australia where beautiful bush walks and beaches are close by. I like to soak it all up, then when I’m in the studio, I draw from memory and my imagination. My painting style is pretty loose. For me, it’s less about control and more about the feeling of joy I get from the shapes and colours.

What was the inspiration behind the range?

It all started with looking intently at some eucalyptus blossoms. They were so bright and alive—like little fireworks in my hand—and I knew I wanted to capture that feeling.

Can you describe how the designs came to life?

I wanted to try something new, so the process started by looking at my existing work and blowing up the details. It was a chance to focus on the beautiful simplicity of forms. The Country Road team was great at giving me space to explore ideas. After about a year of development, I’m really proud of how these designs came to life because it’s the first time my art has been made into woven jacquard. The throws have such a beautiful tactile quality that really connects to my original inspiration.

What did you enjoy most about the process?

The people! Obviously Country Road is such an iconic, enduring Australian brand so it was such an honour when I was approached to collaborate on this homewares range. But I just loved connecting with such an amazing team of creative and kind people. I love that the throw designs feel true to both of our aesthetics coming together and represents a contemporary Australian look I know will stand the test of time, which is so quintessentially Country Road!
